2005 Fall Season Tennis Scores
(fall equinox to winter solstice)
These scores really don't have anything to
do with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of
friendly matches played between Don and John in an attempt
to stay reasonably fit. The season winner earns a
lunch at the local Chinese buffet.

December 18 John 7-6(7-5)
6-3 Match time: 2:30 |
|
The player decide to suspend the 50
degree rule for the second day in a row as the
temperature soared to 44. John took an early
lead but Don got back in the set. John turned
up the heat to start the second, knowing that if it
went three the odds favored Don. John takes
the lead for the first time this season (Don still
has a chance to tie - John has promised to "be
available" if the temperature gets above 40 in the
next few days...)

December 17 John 6-3
6-2 Match time: 1:45

|
John (desperate for a win before the
end of the season) talks Don into suspending the 50
degree rule on this fine 40 degree day. The
balls were heavy and slow, as were the players after
a one month layoff. Don suffered big-time from
the Dixie reflex, missing many opportunities to pass
John at net. The players are tied with
only a few days left in the season, most of them
likely to be cold.

November 15 Don 7-6(7-3)
6-4
Match time: 2:00 |
|
Don came from behind in the first set
to force the tiebreaker. John got a little
traction from 5-2 in the second, but couldn't gain
enough juice to pull out of the rut.

November 12 John 6-3
6-2
Match time: 1:30 |
|
John appears to be fully recovered,
winning in straight sets over Don (who was slightly
sleep depraved). John showed patience and
restraint in choosing his shots and not over
hitting, while Don couldn't keep the Dixie syndrome
at bay.

November 7 Don 6-4 3-6
6-2
Match time: 2:30 |
|
Don regains the lead in this three set
match. John played an excellent second set but
didn't have enough left for the third. Don,
Spencer's own A-Train, seemed to be channeling The
Punisher...

Don 2 John 2
November 4 John 6-3 7-6(7-2)
Match time: 2:05
 |
|
John comes off the disabled list with
a win, hanging on to the second set despite Don's
comeback attempt from 5-3 and double matchpoint
down, wishing aloud that Don would "just go away"
after Don saved the first 2 match points.
"Dreams on," as Joe might say...

October 6 John 6-4 6-1
Match time: 1:35 |
|
John was well prepared and nourished
for this match, and it pays off as he stops Don's
winning streak at three in a row. Don had to
come up with several excellent gets and off balance
winners just to stay in the first set. Once
John had the first set and a break in the second he
was like a horse galloping for the barn, winning the
second set easily as Don couldn't reign him in.

October 1 Don 6-4 6-2
Match time: 1:45 |
|
Don jumps ahead in the new season with
another win. John was up 3-0 in the first set
when he jinxed himself by mentioning his good start.
Don quickly got back in the match, winning 10 of the
last 12 games on the strength of his improved
backhand and accu-lob shot.

September 28 Don 3-6 6-4 6-0
Match time: 2:00
 |
|
Don starts the season with another
come from behind win. Despite losing the first
set, Don made John work hard to win points, setting
up the comeback in. Don rallied from 3-1 down
in the second set to win extend the match to a
third, winning 11 of the last twelve games as the
fatigue factor set in for John..
