2010 Summer Season Tennis Scores
(summer solstice to fall equinox)

These scores really don't have anything to do with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of friendly matches played between Don and John in an attempt to stay reasonably fit.  The season winner earns a lunch at the local Chinese buffet.

Summer 2010 matches:  John 10    Don 1

August 26  John  7-6   7-5   Match time: 2:35
John wins again as Don hits the wall in a long two set match.  Don was mentally fried after several days of work related stress and couldn't find his groove for more than a few points at a time, running up a 2 break lead (3-0) in the second before flailing several serves and duck shots into the net to allow John back into the set.     (Commentary by Don)

John 9  Don 1

August 18  John  7-5   6-3   Match time: 1:55
John stick-saved his way out of playing a tiebreaker in the long competitive opening set.  Don jumped out to a double-break 3-0 lead in the third, but Dixie errors crept back in as John found his timing and began to hit big winners from defensive positions, winning six games in a row to take yet another match.     (Commentary by Don)

John 8  Don 1

August 13  John  7-6(10-8)  2-6  6-3   Match time: 3:00
John saved 10 set points in the first set before closing the first set tiebreaker.  The heat was on and both players were drenched and dragging by the end of the match.  There were surprisingly few breaks,  one each in the first set, two for Don is the second, and only one for John early in third.      (Commentary by Don)

John 7  Don 1

August 1  John  6-3  6-4   Match time: 2:05
John wins another closer than it looks by the score match, despite claims of sleep depravation, errrm, I mean deprivation.  Or both.  Anyway, John's grunting and stroking power forehand continues to give him just enough mph to win an extra point or two at key moments in each set.      (Commentary by Don)

John 6  Don 1

July 25  John  6-2  6-2   Match time: 1:40
John continues swing out like Solderling on steroids, hitting big more often than not, keeping Don off balance and taking away his time.  Don was in almost every game he lost, hitting plenty of winners of his own when John dropped a ball short or came in on a weak approach shot.  But time and again when John needed a point he was able to hit even bigger (or found a crack or a favorable crawl over the net).    (Commentary by Don)

John 5  Don 1

July 22  John  6-3  7-5   Match time: 1:45
John hangs on to win another close match.  John won the first set on a single break, saving several break points on his own serve.  Don struggled with double faults and a lingering Dixie reflex in the second set, but came back from 2 breaks down at 1-4 to get to 5-5 before John finished the set with a several big shots and serves.   (Commentary by Don)

John 4  Don 1

July 11  John  6-4  7-5   Match time: 1:55
John wins again in another match that could have turned either way on a point or two.  The weather was cooler, but the points were still hot and long.  Don's backhand continues to improve, but John made an amazing reflex stick-save that just dropped over the net and died on Don's best blistering backhand low rider to break late the second set.    (Commentary by Don)

John 3  Don 1

July 8  John  2-6  7-6(3)  7-5  Match time: 3:05
John outlasts Don in a long hot morning match - despite the "warmup" starting at 7:40 AM70 and degrees, the temperature had climbed to 94 by the match's end.  Don made nary a Dixie error in the first set while flummoxing John with his backhand.  The second set was tight as both players struggled to keep a grip through dripping sweat, but John jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the tiebreaker and never looked back.  John goes to the fresh shirt for the third set and jumps out 4-0 before Don sheds his own 3 lb of wet shirt.  Don came back from 5-1 to 5-5 with his own 4 game streak, saving triple match point on John's serve at 5-2, finally thwarted when the let cord gods rolled one of John's balls a couple feet down the top of the net and dropped it in Don's court to give John a break point at 5-5.   (Commentary by Don)

John 2  Don 1

July 2  John  6-4  6-4  Match time: 1:55
John grabs the coveted 2-1 ratio with a hard fought win in two long sets.  Both players brought their A-game as this match turned into a sweatfest despite the cooler weather.  Don saved a game  from love-40 during a mini-comback from 4-1 to 4-4 in the second set, but John fired off his best serves of the match (including an ace) to put the pressure right back on Don.  Several games in each set had 5-10 deuce points.  There were quite a few long points, though none were "Mr. Rogers" points - both players were going for bigger shots at every opportunity.   (Commentary by Don)

John 1  Don 1

June 27  John  6-2  1-6  6-0  Match time: 2:00
Despite the score, the first set too almost as much time to play as the final two sets combined (there were 5 deuces in the opening game).  Don appeared to be on a roll in the second set, passing John on both sides and hitting the corners, but John came roaring back in the third set, hitting lines and miracle shots on the run to finish with a full bagle.
(Commentary by Don)

Don 1  John 0

June 25  Don  6-2  3-6  6-2  Match time: 2:00
Don wins the season opener to take the early lead in the summer season. The local courts received fresh paint since our last match. As a result, the surface is slower, and the lines are easier to call. Don takes the all important 1st set 6-2, as John struggles w/ his serve. The 2nd went John's way as he began to find his groove, but Don was dialed in for the deciding 3rd set, making crisp passing shots, and lobs that were out of John's reach. Stay tuned as Don tries to keep [and build on] his lead in the new season.
